Types of Hearing Devices (form factors)

Behind-the-ear hearing aid diagram showing device placement behind the ear

Behind-the-ear (BTE)

BTEs sit behind the ear and use a thin plastic tubing that transports sound into the hearing aid. This is for wide range of hearing loss.

Receiver-in-the-ear hearing aid diagram showing wire placement in ear canal

Receiver-in-the-ear (RITE)

Similar to BTEs, RITEs sit behind the ear and have a thin receiver wire that gets placed into the ear canal. This is best for mild to severe hearing loss.

In-the-ear hearing aid diagram showing device placement inside the ear

In-the-ear (ITE)

ITEs go directly in the ear making them much less noticeable. These are great for moderate to severe hearing loss and for those with difficulty handling small items.

In-the-canal hearing aid diagram showing deep canal placement

In-the-canal (ITC)

ITCs fit deeply into the ear canal and are less visible than ITEs. ITCs are custom made to fit the wearer's ear shape. These are best for mild to mildly severe hearing loss.
